High Blood Pressure - Hypertension a Behavioral Approach

By L. John Mason Hypertension is not just a disease of aging. Young men and women can suffer from its damaging, sometimes killing, effects. Please do not take this condition lightly. Get it treated as soon as possible before it creates lasting damage and adversely effects your life as you do age. High blood pressure can be a very dangerous, and often untreated, symptom of stress. In fact, perhaps 70% of all high blood pressure problems are related to emotional responses to difficult or dangerous situations. When this response becomes habituated by your body, the prolonged high blood pressure can lead to long term permanent physical damage such as hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), heart, strokes, liver, or kidney damage. These can be very serious and very scary, but many people do not know they have high blood pressure or do not treat this potential killer disease. Medications and physician care is the most immediate and important way to begin to control this problem before it can cause permanent, irreversible damage! The expense of medication and its side effects can make this difficult, however, there are other things you can do to minimize the dangers of hypertension and learn to control your body’s response to stress so it will not make you ill or debilitate you! Especially, if you are in the 70% of high blood pressure suffers who have not yet been damaged irreversibly. The keys to controlling high blood pressure are: Breathe slowly/diaphragmatically Regular deep relaxation with Biofeedback Temperature monitoring Use a guided relaxation tape regularly! Learn to breathe diaphragmatically Place a hand over your upper abdomen Push it OUT as you inhale Let in move IN as you exhale Let your chest, shoulder, neck, and back relax as you breathe Only on a very deep breath should these parts move in the breath. This may be the most important Hypertension Technique you can learn! If you link taking one deep breath to a reoccurring work event like a telephone ringing or checking the time, you could remember to take these slow deep breaths throughout your work schedule and keep yourself from letting the tensions build to painful or distracting levels. The secret is check in with your body in the present moment, relax your major muscles, and slow and deepen your breath, This simple exercise can have miraculous results. Other breathing techniques involve a short series of deep slow breaths, where you count as you breathe. Try counting slowly 1-4 as you inhale, pause and hold your breath as you count 1-4, and then release slowly, but completely, as you count 1-8. After four of these breaths, you will be breathing better and more in control of your body’s pattern of holding tension. This can help teach you how to control your hypertension. Caffeine is found in coffee, black teas, cola drinks, chocolate, some over-the-counter pain medications, and other foods/drugs. Read labels. Eating as closely as you can to natural foods (lots of: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc.) will benefit any one. Regular Exercise Regular exercise will help you to work off the effects of life’s stresses. 3-5 times per week of regular exercise that can elevate your heart rate for 15-45 minutes would be best. Check with your doctor before beginning an exercise program if you have been inactive for a long while. Even though elevating your heart rate can be a little scary, the release of tensions and the strengthening of your cardiovascular system will have great benefits. This can improve circulation and so can help to reduce your blood pressure. Positive Thoughts Many people with high blood pressure have trouble maintaining their thoughts in present time or focusing on their bodies in positive ways. Fears or angers from the past or apprehensions about the future seem to take up too much of their conscientiousness. Living in the present, letting go of negative emotions, and letting life’s daily dramas roll off you are all important skills to develop. Taper Medication Taper your high blood pressure medication after you have mastered the relaxation - biofeedback, under your physician’s care. After you have learned to “let go” through relaxation and biofeedback training, you can monitor your blood pressure at home. When you have developed the skills of hand and foot warming, you will find that your blood pressure can begin to drop down in more normal ranges. Write these regular home blood pressure readings down to show your doctor. In the doctor’s office your blood pressure may still be higher than you like! Many people have “white coat syndrome” where their blood pressure will be 10-15 points higher in the doctor’s office than it normally is at home. With your doctor’s agreement and assistance you may be able to begin reducing your high blood pressure medications. Any changes to your normal medication may elevate your blood pressure, so reduce these medications slowly, in gradual steps. Insomnia or problems with sleeping may affect your high blood pressure. Gardening - Hibiscus Plant Care

By Michael Russell The hibiscus is a beautiful plant that makes large, brightly colored flowers. They can be kept inside or outside and only need a small amount of care in order to bloom. If you care for this plant properly, you will be well rewarded. The hibiscus is a tropical plant and therefore, the most important care it needs is to be kept warm. It needs to be kept in temperatures that remain between sixty and ninety degrees most of the time. If the temperature goes beyond this range for just a short time the plant will probably be okay, but it might lose some leaves or flower buds. If the temperature is regularly going below fifty degrees, it will stop growing and flowers will stop blooming. Temperatures that go below freezing will hurt the hibiscus. If it stays below thirty degrees for many hours, the plant will most likely die. Even though this plant is tropical, it cannot get too hot either. If it gets above 95 degrees, the flower buds will probably fall off. However, the plant will live in these conditions if given enough water. When it is hot, the hibiscus needs lots of water regularly. However, don’t flood the roots or let the plant sit in water. If the leaves get droopy, this means it’s not getting enough water. When cold, do not water the plant as much. Only water the plant when the soil gets dry. During cold months, if this plant is watered too much it may develop a fungus disease which attacks the roots. This can kill the plant, so if it is cold it’s better to let the plant get too dry than to over-water it. To keep your plant healthy, you will need to feed it. Get a high quality plant feed that is high in potassium and follow the directions on the package. Don’t get anything that is high in phosphorus such as “super bloom” fertilizers. This can hurt the plant. Hibiscus likes to be fed in small amounts regularly rather than larger amounts less regularly. You should also try to keep bugs off your plant as much as possible. Spraying the plant with a hose will get most bugs off, but there are also some products on the market that rid plants of bugs. You should keep your plant in soil that has good drainage. When you move the plant, don’t go up in pot size very drastically. If you currently have it in a two gallon pot, move it to a three gallon pot next. Don’t jump up to a bigger size. Hibiscus only needs between two and four hours of direct sun a day. It needs plenty of shade during the day. If your flower buds are falling off before opening, this may be a sign that your plant is getting too much sun. If these plants have adequate care, they will make large, gorgeous flowers that come in many colors, such as white, pink red, bright pink, mauve, raspberry, dusty rose and plum. Alcohol Hierarchy: The Order of Wine

By Jennifer Jordan As you embark on a wine tasting, you may require a variety of things: bottles of wine, a cork screw, wine glasses, a wine tasting kit, perhaps even an English accent. While this stuff may be essential, unless you know the hierarchy of the wines, they become useless. When it comes to order of wine, its easy to get ahead of yourself. As bottles line the shelves, the labels coiled around their bodies like curled fingers calling you over, it takes some self discipline to not dive in too quickly, no matter how much you are drooling. Patience, when it comes to tasting wine, is more than a virtue: its the law. Proper wine tasting demands that wine be consumed in a specific order. Drinking incorrectly wont only change the way wine tastes, but it will change your perception of it: if consumed in the wrong order, you may unfairly judge a wine, spitting out your drink and cursing the bottle because its taste is altered. When a wine is tasted in the wrong order, it doesnt stand a chance; its taste and reputation become inferior: it practically becomes light beer. Wines that are heavy and full bodied can overpower the lighter wines, leaving the lighter wines to taste differently than they really do. For this reason, lighter wines should be tasted first. However, this can be tricky when you dont know what a wine tastes like. Its hard to know which ones are light and which ones are heavy: a scale is of no help and if you simply ask the wines about their mass, they will probably just lie about their weight. This is when the other senses must step in. Using the senses of sight, smell, and - if youre lucky enough to have it - ESP, you can usually gauge whether a wine is light or heavy. Lighter wines are dense and tend to leave thick streaks inside the glass when swirled. Heavy wines are deeper in color and their odor is more intense. After you have predicted whether a wine is light or heavy to the best of your ability, put the wines in an order where you will consume the lighter wines first and the heavier wines second. On occasion a defective wine may find its way into your tasting. These wines may smell of rotten egg or cork and should be tasted last, if at all. Once the lighter wines are separated from the heavier wines, the order of the wine gets a little more complex. Sparkling wines, such as champagne, have the honor of being in the front: they are the wines that have called shotgun. Next, light whites wines, such as Albario, should be consumed. These are followed by heavier whites. A full bodied Chardonnay fits into this category. After whites have all been tasted, its time to switch colors. The change is gradual at first as rose wine comes to the table. These wines are pink in color and may be known as blush, Rosado, or Rosata. Light reds , such as a Bardolino, and heavy reds, such as a Cabernet Sauvignon, respectively follow. Once youve got the order of your wines down, the rest of the wine tasting process is simple. You just need to get a few bottles of wine, a cork screw, wine glasses, and a wine tasting kit. Some wine tasting kits may even include all the aforementioned supplies. Family Management Tip #1: Getting Your Family to Pitch In

By Saro Saravanan Family life is busy. It’s hard enough to manage your own time, but in a family you’re responsible for managing everyone’s time. And like any other team, your family cannot succeed without teamwork. Problem is, even though you may be close to your family members, they still tend to take a lot of things for granted. It’s not like you’re facing a competing team in a match everyday, so how do you rally the troops to keep your family running smoothly? If you’re like the typical household organizer, you’re barely getting through a day without goading or reminding your spouse, the babysitter, or the kids several times about what chore or homework or sports activity they’re supposed to be doing or not. And, on occasion, either you or your spouse ends up at wrong place or the wrong time, and there is enough frustration to go all around. Surely, there’s got to be a better way! There is. It’s called family management. No doubt, love is the basis for a happy family. But a little management will go a long way in keeping that institution running smoothly. Family Management ought to be taught in school. These days, there are some schools offering programs on family management, and that’s a good thing. Most of us have never even thought of the term even though we may deal with the issues every day. Some of us are probably even good family managers! If you take a step back and think about everyday life, it offers some of the same challenges any team of unconnected individuals will come to face if they need to live in close quarters and work towards some common goals. In other words, workgroups everywhere face almost exactly the same set of challenges that a family faces. Workgroups spend a lot of time and resources towards managing teamwork. Families generally don’t, and they should. The UCLA Center for Everyday Living noted in a recently concluded study that between two careers and parenting, there are three jobs, but only two people to run them. I’d add that there’s a fourth job - household management. Keeping all these things running smoothly and retaining your sanity requires efficient management. Whether you’re running a busy household or managing a small team, what you need do to keep things running smoothly are the same: Make daily, weekly, and monthly to-do lists for everyone Set expectations Monitor progress and provide frequent feedback Continually educate, motivate, and inspire Get yourself a good family organizer. There are several available. There are paper-based solutions and software-based solutions (like the one my company, Mediabee, makes). Whichever solution you pick, be sure that it meets all of the requirements above. But before you implement the solution, remember, you must get your family’s buy-in first. Not doing so would be to set yourself up for failure. It is human nature to concentrate on your own priorities, and your spouse and kids are human. (So are you as a matter of fact.) The other, often overlooked, fact is, men, women, and children are differently constructed and their priorities tend to be dramatically different. Hence the need for everyone to get on the same page as you start to put this solution into practice. Here are the things to discuss as put this system in place: Why the system is needed. Emphasize the positive aspects of what you’re trying to achieve: to be a healthy and happy family. You’d think this should be obvious, but, as I said, people think differently, even if they’re your own family. Each family’s situation is unique, so you’ll have to discuss the situation appropriately. Bottomline: everybody has to do their part of the required chores, whether or not they think it is a priority for them, or the “family” isn’t going to be happy. For example, the kids probably love take-out meals, but you’re not happy when you can’t give them healthy home-cooked meals. Everyone’s basic needs have to be met for the family to be happy and healthy. What are the rewards for following the system. This is the neat part. If everyone pitches in even for things they don’t consider a priority, then they’re likely to get more time for what they’d rather be doing (within limits, of course). What is required of each person. This is the actual mechanics of splitting the tasks between people. Your family organizer should allow you to easily delegate routine tasks to each member of your household. They should have a mechanism to indicate that they are doing their tasks on a regular basis. You can associate a reward system - whether it’s allowance money or getting to watch their favorite show - with the amount of progress they’re making. Putting this system in place can be very rewarding, because it brings the family closer together as a team, and everyone understands each other better. Whether or not you actually stick with the system for the long haul will depend on how successful you were at getting your family’s buy-in. So plan this carefully, and be sure to have a system that periodically rewards good behavior. It worked for my family and I’m sure it can for yours too. The ability to make repairs to cartilage becomes limited as cartilage cells age. One possible cause of arthritis is the inflammatory response due to the over-reaction of the immune system to an injury or other assault in the body, like an infection. Although osteoarthritis generally accompanies aging, osteoarthritic cartilage is chemically different from normal aged cartilage. As chondrocytes (the cells that make up cartilage) age, they lose their ability to make repairs and produce more cartilage; this process may play an important role in the development and progression of osteoarthritis. Nutrition experts say it takes a combination of supplements, that no one supplement can relieve arthritis pain, build cartilage, etc. One natural approach is to consume foods that are known to help relieve arthritis pain or prevent arthritis. One natural treatment method involves avoiding all inflammatory foods. If you’re not already doing so, make a big effort to watch your diet. Try avoiding the eight most allergic foods, wheat being the most allergenic; they are wheat, corn, eggs, milk, peanuts, fish, shellfish and some nuts, not all. Natural treatment for arthritis is usually a better choice because it’s non-invasive to the body. Some foods and beverages to avoid that are inflammatory are: caffeine, salt, sugar, meat, dairy products, additives, soft drinks, white flour, white rice, alcoholic beverages, fast food, processed vegetable oils, refined, packaged and processed food. A good exercise routine is the key to beating arthritis and arthritis pain. Use Taiji health balls, with the chimes, to strengthen the finger joints: hold two balls, move in a clockwise circle with your fingers to rotate them, then try counterclockwise and do throughout the day. To be on the safe side always seek your doctor’s advice before starting or changing your exercise program. Fight arthritis through proper exercise! If you’re going to go the conventional treatment route and take medications, ask your pharmacist for drug inserts so you can read up on the drugs and understand any side effects or adverse reactions, before taking them. At the very least, understand what the side effects and adverse reactions are for any drug you take. What Gospel Did the Apostle Paul Preach?

By Alan D Campbell What gospel or good news did the apostle Paul preach? Jesus Christ came preaching the gospel of the Kingdom of God (Mark 1:14). Did the apostle Paul preach a different gospel from the one that Jesus Christ preached? Here is what Paul’s companion Luke, the author of the book of Acts says that Paul preached as recorded in Acts 28:30-31: “30And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him, “31Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.” (KJV) Yes, the apostle Paul preached the same gospel or good news that Jesus Christ preached–the Kingdom of God. Paul preached the good news of the Kingdom of God, to all that came unto him while he was under house arrest by the Roman Empire. He also taught about the things he had learned from Jesus Christ. In I Corinthians 15:1, the apostle Paul is reminding the Church of God at Corinth of the gospel he had taught them with special emphasis on the resurrection of the dead. In verses 24 and 25, he describes how Christ will eventually deliver the Kingdom of God to the Father: 24Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. 25For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.” (KJV) Yes, Paul did not preach a different gospel from the one that Jesus Christ preached. It’s Just Not Fair!

By Ann Stewart How many times do you go through your daily life complaining that something is just not fair? Once upon a time there was a wealthy manufacturer who needed extra workers. First thing in the morning he called the local Unemployment Office and hired several people at the going hourly rate. Three hours later he realized that due to a surge in sales he made the same deal with some more workers. Business was booming and, sure enough, he needed still more personnel a couple of hours later, and again one hour before closing to beat the deadline. Boy, was he happy to get all the orders out on time! All the workers were happy to bring home some wages that day as they had been unemployed for some time. They gratefully thanked their boss as he handed them their cheques and went on their way. Then suddenly something happened! As they ripped open their pay envelope, there were some excited outcries of “Wow!” It was soon discovered that everybody had the same identical paycheque! Even those who had just joined that very last hour were being paid a full day’s wages! “There must be some mistake,” said those who had slaved all day, and turned back to let the owner know that Payroll had made some major blunders. “Not so,” explained the gentleman, “did the Human Relations Department not make a deal with you when they hired you, and were you not satisfied with the offer?” They acknowledged that was so, but complained that it was just not fair. The kind man replied simply that it was his right to give as he had done, and asked them why they saw evil in his act of benevolence. He sent them on their way with these words: “So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.” This account took place before Pay Equity and unions came into effect! Yes, if you guessed that it is a contemporary paraphrase of the Gospel of Matthew 20: 1-16, you’re correct! From this parable you learn that the kingdom of heaven is not exactly run as a democracy or any other ‘just society’ here on earth! God is God and, although he invites everyone into the Kingdom and many accept His conditions, He looks at the heart. He chooses to bless those who please Him! Jesus gave Peter a glimpse into the future as to how he was to die. However, when Peter countered and asked how the apostle John would meet his maker, He answered: “If I will that he tarry ’till I come, what is that to thee? Follow thou me.” (John 21:22) That was rather direct, wasn’t it? The bottom line is: are you prepared to do His Will in love for Him and let Him be the judge? “God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.” (John 3:16-17) Are you doing what He is asking of you? Isn’t it great that our wonderful God chooses to welcome one sinner from his deathbed in the Kingdom? Yet you, who may have been saved since childhood, have had the choice to walk in the Light all these years. You were called; but are you chosen?
